Sand filters are generally used with larger pools. You will not usually need a sand filter for a small above ground pool, but they can be a good investment. They are much more effective than cartridge filter pumps, resulting in cleaner pools. Sand filter pumps will cope with much more algae than cartridge filter pumps.
This pump uses finely graded silica sand (not included). With proper maintenance, the sand will remain in good condition and may not need to be changed for many years.
Over time, grease, scale and other contaminants will build up in the filter. This will impair its efficiency and can substantially reduce the water flow and circulation through the system. To prevent this, the cartridge element should be cleaned, every two to six weeks, using Filter Cleaner.
The sand filter should also be backwashed regularly as per the manufacturer's instructions, as this will discharge the collected matter to waste. Once backwashed, the addition of Granular Floc or Water Clarifier will give you sparkling water.

Handy Tips:
- Run your filtration/circulation system every day for enough time to turn the complete capacity of the pool over at least once and ideally 1.5 times. For most 'splasher' pools, this is typically around 4 hours per day.
- After prolonged or excessive pool use on 'balmy summer days' (we wish!), consider extending the filtration/circulation running time.
