Origins of the game of Skipping - The origin of the traditional game of Skipping is quite difficult to identify and there are several different ideas on how the game started.
One of the ideas that is documented is that in Ancient Greece two people held a pole so that a third person could skip and jump over it. This game was very popular and it does seem that it could have developed into modern day skipping.
Another idea is that the game of Skipping originated from making rope in ancient Egypt and China where they used to twist long strands of hemp into ropes. They had to jump the ropes to retrieve strands of hemp. It is therefore thought that perhaps as their skill improved they started to find the fun in the work, which was copied and adapted by children as they made their own Skip Ropes.
It is also know that Skipping in the 1700s was mainly played by boys as girls were not supposed to be so active in case they were to hurt themselves.
