Wooden Skittles – Skittles has been one of the most popular games since at least the medieval times. In the 3rd or 4th Century German monks used to throw stones at the wooden club that they carried for protection. The wooden club, called a kegel, was what would be the modern day pins in their version of the game of Skittles. The kegel represented sin or temptation and so they would throw the stones until they knocked it down.
One of the variations of the game of Skittles came from Holland in the 1700s and involved the modern day King Pin (the pins were made from bones and the King Pin was the largest and was in the middle of the other pins). They also used a ball with holes in it for their fingers to go. It is believed that it was this version of the game that was later taken to America and which became the extremely popular game of ‘Ten Pin Bowling’.
