The use of square sawn timber reduces natural cracking and splitting in the surface of the wood (caused by moisture in the air and ground), because the timbers are mainly milled outside the heart wood. The timber is also naturally seasoned and dried before it is cut in order to minimise twisting, shrinking and cracking. The durability and strength of round wood and sqaure cut timber are about equal.
